International Women’s Day Celebration 2012 organized by Stichting Bayanihan

By Lana Jelenjev-Flores

In 1910, Clara Zetkin (Leader of the 'Women's Office' for the Social Democratic Party in Germany) tabled a proposal for an International Women’s Day during the second International Convention of Working Women held in Copenhagen. This proposal, which was born from the desire of women in the socialist movement to have their demands on political inclusion, economic equality and personal autonomy recognized by society, was granted approval by a conference of more than 100 women from 17 countries. Since then, International Women’s Day has been celebrated every year as a day that helps to push women’s issues onto the political agenda.

In the Netherlands, International Women’s day is celebrated in different cities and towns with fervor and enthousiasm. As an active Philippine women organization, Stichting Bayanihan is doing her share in making the issues of the Filipinas visible.

By Rochita Loenen-Ruiz and Lana Jelenjev-Flores

Bayanihan volunteers, together with their families and friends gathered last December 17, 2011 at the Drie Generatiecentrum in Utrecht to celebrate Christmas. For many expatriates, Christmas is fraught with emotion, and the theme Stichting Bayanihan’s Special Christmas Celebration: 20 years of Noble Voluntary Service is evocative of remembrance, thanksgiving, joy, warmth and pride.
